You need to appeal this ruling if it goes this way. No judge should have any power, to over rule or decide how a parent can raise theor children that is PURE Non-American. Unless the parent is abusive to thier children and proven.

As a non religious based family we feel this has nothing to do with religion.
This is about government having control of our parental rights. It is wrong and I hope every parent that has ever home schooled stands up to protect our rights.
We home schooled because the PS was unable to provide a challenging and appropriate education and we are barely middle class and unable to enroll our daughters in Private School.
Home Schooling more then met our daughters medical and academic needs. Both of our children are academically advanced compared to what the PS sees as their age peers. We do appreciate the PS and my daughters have been enrolled when the PS meets their needs.
This Judge needs to be removed from the bench.

The American people need to start deciding who judges them by a vote. A single solitary man should not be able to pass any type of judgment on anyone. It should take three judges. Are the Public schools going to insure that religious studies are adhered to , in any way? No, and that is a problem. . .

As someone who is opposed to all forms of compulsion and government interference, I think you may well have planted a seed here.
The children need to be exposed to the "socialization" that public schools offer ie... teachers sexually abusing their students..rampant drugs...homosexual indoctrination...school shootings need I say more? This judge needs to be removed from the bench of justice.
Our prayers are with you, I hope we can stop this before we are all in this situation. Just trust in God, he has a plan for everything.

I hate to say this; but NC is VERY hostile to moms in divorce proceedings (even if the dads have been adulterous and/or neglectful---these arrogant uncompassionate liberal judges we have rarely award bare minimum. They frequently take everything from the mothers and award anything the fathers ask for-- to the point of removing health insurance from a woman dying of cancer when the attorney husband makes $500K per year!)
Lastly, I will do what ever I can do as an individual t call and write to the appropriate people and publicize by word of mouth to everyone.

After having just called the Judicial Standards Commission office, this morning, the lady there says callers may not realize that "asking the Commission" to review his decision is something that that Commission cannot do. It does not have the authority to do that. either they are telling me the wrong thing, today, or else that's the truth. So, we may need to only appeal to those who have some authority regarding this, such as legislators, and also the NC Bar Association, and ... do you know, Robyn, if Venessa is a member of HSLDA? If not, then, we need to act on her behalf, to contact some other legal agencies, who handle such cases, since her making an appeal to a higher court may cost her money she simply does not have, now, as most of us also would not have, in such a case.
Just thought you'd want to know and I am sorry for using this comment section but do realize you are moderating comments, so will trust you will just use my comment to maybe alter what you've listed, above, on this page on your site, so that others will know they may get nowhere by calling that Commission office, as I tried to.
They just recommend she appeal to a county or state court, that's an appellate court. They have no jurisdiction in "reviewing" Judge Mangum's decision. That's handled by others, and an appeal to a higher court is what's needed.
I would agree with all else that you recommended, though.

And I do realize that the "response" I was given, by telephone, could be a "ploy." But on the other hand, if it's true, then we must urge others "not" to call that office. We need to show that we, as homeschoolers, are going to do what I did not do, and that means we must "be careful" and "learn how the legal system works," and call only "those offices" that can have the greatest positive impact on Venessa's case.

Robyn, I'm on the other side of the fence as a Christian man, whose wife committed repeated and unrepentant adultery. I can only say that my prayers go out to you. As in my situation, your ex-spouse is doing all possible to reverse the supposed "judgmental nature" of Christianity (yes, we believe in right and wrong), and replace it with the secular anything-goes attitudes and believes. I have learned to truly trust the Lord, and I pray this only serves to strengthen you.

Hopefully this order will be overturned. If it isn't changed, and I were her, I would challenge the judge by applying for any financial assitance to send them to a private school. It would be a direct defiance of the specific order, but at that point would involve everyone's right to choose to Private school as well as homeschooling.
God also expects us to move when there are those who oppress. This judge should have to reverse his decision and we should fight for our rights as parents. Well, we voted and what have we gotten more government and it is not the people that they are listening to. Fight for your rights.

I'm taking action....NOW. I will write an amicus brief today and let the judge in oversight know that what is occurring is not only contrary to precedent law, it is prejudicial. Everyone who reads this article MUST write in opposition or there will be no movement by the court on its decision.
I think the best that we, living in other states, can do for this much abused mother is to provide funds to help her continue her fight to protect her children's best interests. Can you, Robyn, or Vanessa's lawyer, open a bank account in her behalf to which we can make donations?

I called Ty Harrell's office. The lady that answered said that their office has no say in what the judge did. When I expressed my distaste for the lack of concern, she laughed out loud. North Carolina, get rid of Ty Harrell.

Judge Mangum has taken away Mrs. Mills rights as a mother. We also homeschool and I would be devasted if a judge ordered my child back to public school. I will make calls on her behalf, and also let other homechool families we know, know about the case.

Hi I suggest getting in touch with the Christian Foundation Coalition and any other religious organization. This will be very very effective. Basically this judge has attacked the Christian faith and that is enough to rile Christians. That is what this is really about. I will write to all that I can including Senator Richard Burr and any media outlets I can. I will also see if Drudge will place this article on his website, DrudgeReport, as well as Fox News. If anyone else knows of any other news outlet then put it there as well. I also suggest the 711 Club. They are on Fox. This is blantant religious discrimination. Use it as that. That will get you further.

To whom it may concern:
I believe there is just cause to consider judicial misconduct in the above reference case. His ruling was based not on facts in evidence, but allowed his prejudice against a Christian based education that he cited as not “well rounded” to justify handing down a ruling forcing these children into public school despite the fact that the children tested as much as 2 years ahead of grade. There was no basis in fact that the children were not getting a proper education, only that they were not getting, in his opinion, a well rounded education. Further, he subjected the defendant to mental health evaluation due to her religious beliefs.
It is my belief and charge that this judge has allowed his personal and social prejudices to influence his ruling and that in doing so he has failed to perform his duties impartially or with diligence. Further, I believe that by his prejudiced actions, he has effectively expressed a bias based on religious preference.
I ask that your Commission investigate and intervene to insure fair justice is provided in this case.
I am a balloon artist, while I have no children of my own, I can tell you I am quite an expert on child behavior.
I have performed for Public school children and home schooler's as well. There is a big difference in the intelligence levels and behavioral skills. While more home schooled children appear to be more intelligent over all, it is the behavioral skills that the home school children have that is the big difference. Home school children (overall) have manners, patience, use less profanity and are a joy to deal with. Public School children tend to be more aggressive, pushy and crude.
I like both the types of children, but if I were given the choice to have a world full of one or the other... the choice would be easy. HOME SCHOOLING would rule out.
The reason public schools are worse in my opinion but it is not the teacher's fault (in general), but it is the fact of bad new teaching methods being taught, kids not being allowed to be punished, the poor quality textbooks and the values not being taught anymore.
Lastly, prisons are starting to learn you don't want to put young offenders with veteran criminals as they "pick up ideas" on how to do crimes "better". In public schools you find the same. The worse behaved kids are often the ones who influence the "good" kids.

4 years ago I also filed for divorce from my abusive and unfaitful husband. He also maintained an addiction to porn, including that classified as underage.
After I had remarried, my ex took us to court to prevent me from moving to Canada with my then 5 and 3 year old children. (My second husband is Canadian).
This was following my ex's history of not seeing his children, being uninvolved, not maintaining visitation, paying under the state minimum of child support, admittedly (in court) stalking me and my new husband, etc.
The judge appointed to hear our case was a state senator's son personally appointed by the state governor. He had never even tried a civil case such as custody during his time as a trial laywer.
He ruled that my legal inability to work in Canada as an immigrant was my fault and akin to me deciding to take a vacation. So I was ordered to return to work (I am a stay at home mom as as matter of conscience) and to pay my ex child support and half of his medical insurance costs for the children.
The children were given to my ex, and when I was unable to pay child support due to the Canadian legality of working, the judge revoked all of my visitation rights, and I have not been allowed to even see my children in almost 3 years. They are now 9 and 7 years old. I will not even be allowed to see them if I make partial payment, only in full.
The judge also reversed our divorce settlement, making me back pay my ex's debts even though I had to cash in a retirement fund to do so. I was also stripped of my half of the marital residence, and my ex was given it in full with all of the equity.
When I submitted the frightening problem of my ex stalking and so on, and he openely admitted to it, the judge just told me we needed to stop playing games with each other.
The judge laughed at my concern over underage porn and refused to even view the evidence. That leaves my ex now teaching in Christian school, coaching children, and involved in a church while not only my children but countless others are are left vulnerable to him.
My ex does not even allow me to speak to my children on the phone except about once a month, and he makes my daughter sit in his lap to talk to me.
The judge also ordered an in home evaluation for a lengthy period of time. It involved us keeping someone of the judge's choice in our home who would observe my second husband and I in day to day life to ascertain the quality of our married life.
During my initial hearing my attorney met with the judge and my ex's attorney in a separate room at the very start. When my attorney came back, she refused to even defend me, and later refused to even bill me. She said she just wanted nothing more to do with this case.
I was refused a court reporter, the judge said none were available and my lawyer just shrugged. The judge also emptied the courtroom of everyone but my ex and I and our lawyers during the proceeding so that there is no record of what was said during my 8 hour interrogation.
For the following appeals, no other lawyers would even agree to represent me.
So to all of you who are stepping up to help this woman and her children, I applaud you. Please don't stop fighting for her. Fight for all of us who have no voice.
This is not just a fight for homeschooling, but a fight for freedom, and the right to love family, values, and God. God bless and you stand in the gap for justice.

Shame on you, Mr Mills! Putting your own desires above what is best for your children! Notice he has said he doesn't want to pay any "homeschool expenses".

Still, I realize you feel betrayed by your husband and I don't know nor wish to know the intimate details of your personal life, but it may have been better for the children to suffer through a bad marriage for a few more years. Just my $0.02.
My husband is beginning the same situation with his son. The ex-wife stopped their shared home schooling and placed his son in public school without even telling my husband. They are now in court in addition to custody. Does anyone have any advice for the situation?
We thought we were alone. We're also in NC. The judge hasn't made a decision and is ignoring the fact that the ex-wife did this. Not to mention this is the third time that the ex-wife has pulled the boy from public school, home schooled him for a few months, and then put him back in public school. This time they were sharing home-schooling and she did it without warning or conversation.

I am sending all I know letters on this as well as the ones the article asked for. I taught two out of my three children at home. They started in regular schools but Public schools do not offer what parents can do. At home they get a real good education with out all the non sence subjects. When my daughter finished her greads was showing her at three years of Colleage. One subject 6 years of colleage level. That judge was wrong in a lot of the judgments. For the mom to undergo testing and not the dad. The main thing kids learn in public schools is gangs and getting in trouble for the most part. The son that liked public school guess where he is??? Jail along with a lot of public school kids. Thats what public schools get you.

This was not a persecution of CHRISTIAN values, it was a persecution of PROTECTIVE MOTHERS. Judges all over the country have been doing exactly the same thing to mothers in family court for decades now.
These are not "liberal judges." The primary basis that these judges, lawyers, so-called "experts," and father's rights advocates share is a belief in Patriarchal superiority, which puts them more on the conservative scale than the liberal one.
Do a search for "Father's Manifesto," and "Father's Rights." You will find step by step instructions for adulterous or abusive fathers to gain full custody of their children and utilize the legal system as a tool of abuse against their ex-wives.
This is the problem, not a bias against home-schoolers. The prejudice against mothers in family court is epidemic, and you people are just now getting a small glimpse of it.
Our courts are a nightmare just as our representative are. Thank you Robyn for your efforts. We must join together like never before and burn the phone lines up. Like the State can do a better job educating our children than we can? What? Are you kidding me? In California they can't even manage their own financial affairs. How then, are they going to manage your children's education. Mrs. Williams, you just keep doing what you're doing and move out of CA if the government continues to try to dictate to you. Well since this can be viewed as a persecution of protective mothers, I say all we women contact the White House Council on Women and Girls. The newly formed council that Obama just signed yesterday.
My wife and I home-schooled four children for a total of 18 years. As the members, then as leaders of the largest Christian home-school organization of a local church in NM, we were constantly challenged by family, friends, and others about our decision to educate our own children. We don't regret a single day. Our children are now fine upstanding citizens that are looked up to by their peers. The socialization that many refer to is not always a positive thing. I believe that is why we talk to our children about "peer pressure".
I was a certified teacher for several years and was contantly amazed at my wife's ability to teach difficult and complex subjects to our children. She has a high school diploma and taught our children under a waiver from the state of NM. I have more degrees than a thermometer and look to my wife as the smarter and more spiritual of us.
We were always in confrontations with those that oppose home-schooling of any sort. Those that call themselves "professionals" think they know what is best for our children.
Always keep in mind, the teacher has a new bunch of kids to care "deeply" about each year; as parents, we care for our children's welfare and success from craddle to grave.
This is nothing but the good 'ol boy system alive and well in NC.
I've called many of the numbers listed and voiced my opinions and it seems as if no one can do anything about it. I agree with the post that suggested she contact HSLDA!!! They are great! Also, APPEAL!!!! It seems as if that is the only thing that can be done at this time.

I just read about your plight & fight against what I, and everyone else with a modicum of intelligence, can see as the uber-liberal Democrat Party attempt to indoctrinate your children into THEIR ideogies and THEIR "politically correct" views of the world, where God doesn't exist, White, Anglo-Saxon men are the scourge of the earth, that dinosaurs do NOT exist and that ultimately, they know better than YOU do as to how to raise your children.
I hope you fight this with every fibre of your being. This is nothing more than communisim/socialisim being foisted upon you and your children without any reservations nor care for your beliefs and ideals.

Posted below is a copy of my email to Governor Perdue and I suggest that everyone else who sees what's happening here as being inherently wrong and on myriad levels do the same.

Dear Madame Governor Perdue:
I am writing to you from the State of Washington and in regards to the horrendous ruling this so-called “Judge” passed down up Robyn Williams against her homeschooling her children. This “Judge” is overstepping his bounds in an obscene and ugly way, in effect imposing his own uber-liberal ideologies as they pertain that children should be forced into sub-par public schools where the so-called “teachers” can impose and indoctrinate kids into their way of thinking, i.e., homosexuality is A-OK and you’re a racist if you don’t embrace the homosexual way of life, that pre-teen sex is A-OK as well, with “teachers” passing out condoms WITHOUT any input whatsoever from the parents who have the ultimate right to raise their children as they see fit, as long as the child in not endangered by physically or emotional abuse.
Judging by the overwhelming outpouring of support, I see this as untenable situation for you and your State. This will bring nothing but negative press and this story will not go away until Miss. Williams is allowed to teach and raise her kids the way she deems proper. It’s obvious that these two kids are so much farther ahead then their peers and one can’t help but wonder if this is the real reason behind this travesty of personal rights – that the uber-liberals running this country can’t tolerate the fact that their idea of public education is being proven to be far less superior than that of a homeschooled child. And this is what is so laughable about their stand on this matter; everyone already knows that our nations public school system has been co-opted so badly that it will take decades before our schools resemble something close to what they were like when I went, and to give you an idea as to how long ago that was, I graduated in May of 1980, not to mention that from the age of 15 until she retired at the age of 67, my grandmother taught kindergarten as well as my step-father was also a teacher, teaching all forms of music until he also retired some six years ago, so I know full well what I’m talking about.
Bottom line here, Madame Governor, is that this “judgment” cannot be allowed to stand. Not only is it inherently wrong on myriad levels, it sets an ugly precedent. Do you really want your state, under your watch, to be forever known as the state that started the assault upon our very rights to raise our own children? What’s to say that it won’t stop there? That somehow a “Judge” can now decide what a child should eat, wear, listen to, etc., is a frightening thought and one I hope to never see in my lifetime, or even the lifetime of my two year old niece, who incidentally will be entirely homeschooled and yet have an equally active social life where daily interaction with her peers will be the norm, not the exception, which by all accounts is what Ms. Williams has upheld in her ideals as to how best to raise her children.
In closing I want to make clear that while this “Judge” in particular is overstepping his bounds to the point where I seriously doubt his ability to render fair and unbiased decisions from the bench, I do not think that all Judges are as bad as Mr. Magnum is, nor do I deem all teachers to be nothing more than uber-liberal indoctrinators. I also realize that there are (at least I hope this to be true) far more good teachers then there are bad ones, but anymore I’m beginning to wonder if it’s not really a toss-up, as it seems that everyday I read a story of a teacher gone horribly wrong.
Please, Governor Perdue. Please make the right decision here (not the politically correct decision) and stop Judge Ned Magnum from perverting and bastardizing this woman’s God given right to raise her children as she sees fit and without all the politically correct garbage that the uber-left wing constituency sees fit to ram down our children’s (and our own) collective throats.

I'm sure you are very busy, but I believe this matter requires your urgent attention and action.
Please review the facts of Venessa Mills' case, as presented on www.HSinjustice.com, and review the full official records for yourself.
It is outrageous that Venessa Mills is being victimized by such contradictory, inconsistent, and unsupportable statements from the bench - on top of the precedent this sets for removing children from a thriving homeschool environment and placing them into public school.
Unfortunately, we cannot simply wait for the "system" to fix this problem, because the system is what has broken down. Please make a quick phone call and rectify this abuse of the law.
In the interest of justice, intervention is required to compel Judge Mangum to act in accordance with the evidence and with common sense. Otherwise, he should be removed from case number #08CVD17753 before any further damage is done.
Our concern is also that this same situation does not happen again, and another mother (or father) is put through a similar ordeal. If Judge Mangum is not capable of impartially ascertaining facts and acting in a logical manner, his fitness to serve as a judge should be called into question.
I do not have any grudge or ax to grind against good judges, good laws, or good attorneys - but rewarding the guilty and punishing the innocent is an abuse of justice by any standards.
Many people will be watching to see what action you choose to take.

I couldn't believe it when I read the story of what is happening to you! I was homeschooled from the time I started school all the way through my junior year in high school, and I've done just fine. I was able to transition fairly easily into a Christian boarding school for my senior year of high school, and I went on to college and later got my Master's. I know my mom did the right thing for me and my sisters, and nobody should have the right to take that choice away from parents. I hope and pray that the final decision will be on your side.

In early 1999, I got brave and left my physically and mentally abusive husband of 15 years. I had homeschooled my 4 out of 5 (no. 5 was only 5 at the time)children for 11 years. I found myself in a battered women's shelter. The court deemed the homeschooling unacceptable and tho the children had never homeschooled in their lives and tested above grade level, they were forced into public schools. Tho I resided in a shelter in a state near mine (due to back then no shelters took males my children's ages)and enrolled them in schools near the shelter, because I did not enroll them closest to my hme (which would have required a 45 min drive each day over a bridge/river)-I lost custody of my children in Feb. 1999 and never was able to regain custody of them. I divorced in 2001 and my Ex denied me my visitation for many years, courts would not do anything. I did not have to pay child support.
I spent years trying to see my children. Out of the 5, I only have a solid relationship with 1, fair with 2-3...several have had alcohol abuse issues, 1 had a baby at 16 (she went on to get her GED and is now in final yr of college). Two others are currently in college. I am a Christian and I was a stay at home Mom all those years of HSing. My thoughts: When you are a Christian and get in the worlds system of family courts-things do NOT go well! While I would like to think my case was extreme, future studies deemed not. Incidentally, I as issued a full order of protection for the next 4 years, the day I lst custody of my children. I will be praying for Venessa.

While I would love to read through all these comments, I don't have time. I do want to help out by letting you know that, unfortunately, HSLDA probably won't be able to help you because they couldn't help me. The reason they couldn't help me is because the homeschool issue was between the biological parents of the children, not by the school or another organization, or an individual outside the nuclear family.
I will also do the Action Steps listed above that I am able to do.
Above all - PRAY! He will intercede!
Both children were homeschooled for 4 years with the approval of both parents. They will have a lot of trauma to deal with just from the divorce. But by forcing the children to change everything about their days and their lives will traumatize them much more. I feel that their lives should remain as consistent as it has been. That will make it easier for them to cope with the divorce. It is in the best interest of the children to maintain the nurturing environment that they are accustomed to daily.
Looks like this 'judge' (using the term as loosely as is possible) needs to get some homeschooling. My children were homeschooled, one graduated 4.0 with highest honors from a 4 year advertising college, and with perfect attendance - all of his own self discipline. The other son is now close to chef status in a high level fine dining restaurant, and he's only 23. Homeschooling is the only choice now for perents who love their children.

I am feeling your pain. I homeschool my 3 children ages 13, 11, and 9. I have been separated for 4 years and divorced for 2. We were Christians--which was one reason we decided to homeschool. I still am. Things were great until he remarried. Ever since it has been one war after another. He does not believe as he used to about anything. He threatens me with public school all of the time. Even though, just like your case, the kids do very well and are involved in outside activities. His whole attitude toward homeschooling has changed. I think he is just tired of paying alimony which supports me to stay home and homeschool. I have my BS degree in education(not that that matters). I have often wondered what would happen if we ened up in court. I even said once that a judge would have to order me to send them to public school. I thought I had all the support(from test scores and other things) just like you, that I needed. This is a travesty---a true injustice. I caught the story on the news last night and I had an e-mail from my homeschool group this morning. I am a fellow North Carolinian. You can count on me to call and write. I support you 100%. What most shocked me about this situation was Judge Magnum's statement to Mrs. Mills: "to challenge the ideas you've taught them." That plus his ordering the children to attend public school because they "need the broader focus and socialization available to them in public school," sets an extremely dangerous precedent. Here's why:
My ex-wife is Russian, formerly a citizen of Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, raised & schooled in the Soviet Union of the 1960s-'80s. She was a Soviet-educated atheist who found Christ in 1991. And while our marriage did not work out, and we produced no children, we shared our faith & belief in Chrisianity. My conversations with her, and extensive self-study of Russian/Soviet culture & history since then, has given me an insight into that society that most Americans do not have. According to her college transcript from Kuban University (Krasnodar, Russia), the first required class is not College Russian (like College English & Math at American universities), but Marxist-Leninist Philosophy With Scientific Atheism. That title alone is one of the most frightening things I've ever heard of. The reason I mention this:
A court order such as Judge Magnum's — especially when the judge uses the keywords 'to challenge' and 'socialization' — to me smacks of leading the United States not only in the direction of current European-type socialism (such as Germany), but even into Marxist socialism, where children are considered property of 'the state', where parents have no say in their children's education, where free-thinking is banned and individual rights are destroyed. I'm also deeply concerned that Judge Magnum ordered a "mental health evaluation" for Mrs. Mills — who is a Christian believer — but not for her soon-to-be ex-husband, who is not. Again, this is straight out of Soviet socialism, declaring that someone who does not fit in with 'the norm' of secular society has some kind of mental disorder. This is, of course, absolutely ridiculous, as the WordNetDaily report clearly shows Mrs. Mills to be a rational, caring parent and competent teacher. And while & I have no children, I'm a strong supporter of both my home church and home schooling.
Maybe I'm going off the deep end a little too much, but after living with, being with & feeling a true Russian's heart & soul — along with the fact that both the administration & congress of the United States federal government is now predominantly Democratic — the issue of home schooling is something we as Christians must take deadly serious.
To conclude, ironically, of all people, the ACLU of Texas stated exactly what is at stake here: "This generation of children will be the next generation of adult citizens who will make decisions on the directions this country will take. They will be molded by whatever education they receive." I, personally would much prefer to see the next generation of children & teenagers in my home church (and there are a lot of them) raised in a loving Christian lifestyle, and not be subjected to the horrors of secular, government-run public schools that I endured throughout 7th-9th grades.

I am very concerned about your case, as I am currently in the same situation in Orange County, CA Courts now. I am homeschooling my children through a public charter school for the first year. My oldest son's father has challenged this, I was never married to him, and he lives 70 miles away and does not take any interest in his education or daily life. Just alternate holidays, weekends and vacation periods.
We have been in court since May of 2008, spent 17k so far (of borrowed money) and have yet to see the judge, issued minors counsel and we are scheduled for a trial in April to finally decide the matter. (hopefully)
I enrolled my children in a PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL, that I use to homeschool through, they provide teachers who monitor the kids progress and continue to test in state standardized tests. YET, my ability to continue homeschooling my son who has documented ADHD diagnosis since he was 6. He got poor grades after working twice as hard as any other boy his age. Now that he is in homeschooling environment, he got all B's and one A, best grades ever, given by his teacher and not his mother :)
I am afraid of this happening to me too, we share joint legal custody, I have primary physical, so why would the father's request be granted? I am planning on sending him to a hybrid program next year even, 2 days a week he attends school on campus through a public homeschooling charter, and 3 days at home to do the homeschooling with me. This STILL MAY not be allowed. Can you believe this injustice?
My son has never been exposed to the kind of kids that are in the school he would have to attend if he was ordered to go back to traditional school in our district. Why should he have to be socialized with kids that are not the kind of kids I want my kids to socialize with?
In the "real world" I dont go down to Hollywood or LA to socialize with thugs or gangsters, because it's the real world, as an adult you can CHOOSE to socialize with upstanding people, you can choose to not be around people who may influence you in negative ways, why do we take these rights away from our kids?
PLUS if my son is sent back to traditional school, my other children would suffer and most likely not be able to homeschool either, because I will be spending 3 hours or so after school doing homework with my son who won't be able to keep up in a middle school environment. I cant afford my lawyer anymore, and HSLDA wont get involved due to custody AND the fact that we arent even homeschoolers because we attend a PUBLIC CHARTER school, yet I am being viewed as a homeschooler. Where is the justice here!!

I am seeing many comments on whether or not HSLDA is on this case or not? HSLDA cannot do anything about this unless the family was already a member of HSLDA.org I assume she can hire them indepently, but all the more reason to become a member of HSLDA. This is very interesting "logic" on the part of Judge Ned Mangum.
"They allege, you deny" is what he repeated. He stated that this is what he would order in response to any similar allegation - so all that was needed was an allegation of drug abuse, or alcohol abuse, or physical abuse, and he would also have ordered assessments for all of those things - without one shred of supporting evidence or "probable cause."
If there is an attorney that will bring a case before Judge Ned Mangum and raise the issue of his mental abilities, then, according to Judge Ned Mangum, he will order himself tested. In addition, raise the question of attorney Jaye Meyer and Mr. Mills.
All three, according to the very clear evidence have the inability to show empathy or comprehend cognitive processes in assimilating facts. Compromise and working together are seriously lacking in their social skills. Maybe if Judge Ned Mangum went back to public school for a few more years this might improve. We will find out when he is test by trained professionals.
They would rather make normal things seem out of place and out of place matters seem normal. Definitely a symptom of bad sanity.
I am serious, since they are serious. I will even pay for the case to be brought into Judge Ned Mangum's court room.
Since we need no proof, nor hint of proof, which there is plenty of anyway, let the testing begin.
Anyone being dragged before Judge Ned Mangum should immediately, before being sworn in, raise the objection. Anyone going into his court room should object on the grounds that clearly he cannot, will not process facts. Don't waste your money. Just let Judge Mangum's injustice roll over you and save your money for appeals.
When I first moved to N.C. a few years ago I heard so much bad news about the state and how backward it was that I could hardly believe it.I had hoped things had changed but no this state is still as backward as ever,maybe more so.Just look,they still have not passed a law to protect pregnant women and their babies who have been murdered.They act as though a murdered baby is just a non-entity, nothing to be concerned about.
This judge Mangum is legislating from the bench which is wrong.Making law is the job of the State Legislature not a judge who likes to play with people's lives.

My ex also started a case against me to take away my children who have been homeschooled for 4 years (never been in public school) same age as yours and years ahead of their grade level as well. He was taking them away because he claimed I was neglecting their education by homeschooling them!! So he and his lawyer were attacking my choice to homeschool. Even my own attorney was against homeschooling. It went on for a year. I went into debt spending thousands on my defense (single mom)then he dropped the case 2 days before the hearing. Thank GOD.

This case is a real outrage! I am a homeschool mom of a 12year old in IL. This judge has no business telling this mother to send her children to school, it is our God given right to homeschool our children at home. No judge or other government official should be imposing their views onto someone else. Here in IL our public school system is terrible and under no circumstances would I send my child. The public schools don't hold high morals and standards for children, which many homeschool parents feel is very important. Homeschool children have been proven to far out perform their public school peers. This judge not only needs be removed from this case but also needs to be removed from being a judge. He has no business in a court of law.

It seems that the Government and all its officials have decided that they know more about whats best for the Amercan people than we do. We ARE still FREE in AMERICA for now anyway, and WE have the choice to choose what is best for OUR CHILDREN. It's a known fact that homeschooled children advance much faster than children taught in public schools and they are taught how to respect others. Most importantly, they are not subjected to the corruption that is learned in schools. This judge should not be allowed to make such a judgement simply on his own personal opinion. I home school my 7 year old daughter and I have 4 grown children that I WISH I had homeschooled. She is doing SO much better than they did in a public school. Obama wants to teach our children his morals. I know what my Bible says, and as for me and mine, we will serve the Lord in ALL things and that includes the teachings of my children. God will never give you more than you can handle. As a divorced father who pays all the bills for three children as well as full child support while they live with me, I know first hand that there is no justice in the court. I have a similar story. The court will not give me custody because I want to use the money to send my children to Catholic school; thus no custody for me and my children will attend public school while "mom" collects money from me and works 1 day a week. God save us.
First off this is just sick on so many levels. Hubby does what he does and well this is simply to hurt the wife. He wants it convenient for him at his kids expense. I'm truly sad that someone would sacrafice their kids to save a buck. Divorce and teens is a lethal combo without throwing in PS.
I'm praying for them. This just has be overturned. Hubby abandoned this marriage. Both he and the judge need mental evaluations. I'm so sorry for your friend. I'm sorry for so many things for her and praying that she heals and that her children heal.

I've homeschooled since 1984 and had to fight tooth and nail at times but you will survive and suceede.
Isn't in our state's constitution that homeschooling is legal (NC) I send in my intentcard every year with no troubles. How can the judge over rule our states constitution.
A website http://www.homeschoolliberty.com has been set up to serve as an event coordination site to protest Judge Mangum and his judicial activist on the Venessa Mills family.
The current event of focus is a protest on March 24th on the same day that the North Carolinians for Home Education (http://www.nche.com) are sponsoring an event called CapitalFest. This event brings homeschool families to Raleigh, NC for a day of government workshops and meetings with legislators.
I am also working to build a network of homeschool groups in NC to function as a rapid response team whenever homeschool liberty is under attack.
I'm praying for you and your kids. I'm a former homeschooling mom (now a Grammy) and will stand with the HS community as long as I'm alive.

I also had my last 2 minor children taken out of homeschool - after I homeschooled all 9 of my children for 20 years. The judge stated they were too mature and needed to be put in traditional school so they would be more normal. I was married to an abusive man for 28 years. When I told him I might separate from him because of his abuse - he told me, "If you ever leave me, I will make sure you don't get to homeschool any more and I will leave you penniless and childless. Over the past 8 years, he has finally almost accomplished his goals - with the help of a corrupt family court system, which has no accountability and is allowed to operate in secret. It is just one massive cottage industry made up of the attorneys, judges, "experts" GALs etc. etc. It is a mockery of justice. My children's father filed an emergency petition in 2006 for them to be put in traditional school, then 5 days before school started, they were forced - for the first time in their lives - to suddenly enter a public school. This was after they had to endure a divorce and countless trials because the courts continued to allow their father to file endless petitions over the years. I have spent over a million dollars in legal fees and finally, in 2007, he took custody away from me - in violation of my state's laws regarding anyone who has been acknowledged by the court to have been abusive during the marriage. The damage that has been done to my children is immeasurable. There must be an outcry by the public - to shine light on the horrible harm that is being done to children and stay-at-home moms. There is an atmosphere in the family court system of disgust for stay-at-home moms - even if they don't homeschool. My heart is just breaking for this mom and her children. I know the anguish that she is experiencing. I will really pray that this wonderful effort to bring this evil to light - will result in this mother again being able to homeschool her children and that her adulterous ex-husband will no longer be able to harm any of them.
I too have a similar judicial injustice through divorce proceedings. While Shadrack, Meeshack, and Abednigo were in the furnace for a while, they came out the other side without even the smell of smoke on their clothes. And remember, Jesus was in the furnace with them. NEVER will he leave or forsake you. God's Word will not return to Him void!
Tell Vennessa the story from the Bible of the single mom. Remember the story of Elisha and the widow woman whose sons were going to be taken away to pay taxes? Elisha asked her what she had at home and she only had a little bit of oil. Elisha told her to gather all of the vessels she could then go home and cover the windows and fill the vessels with oil. Vessels took much time to make, and I'm sure people were not willing to part with their valuable vessels to a widow with three boys, the tax collecter on her heels, and probably didn't think they would ever see their vessels again. But she obeyed and when she went home, covered the windows and began to pour- the oil did not stop until the last vessel was filled. The widow sold the oil, paid her taxes, and the Bible said she was able to take care of her children on what she had left. God could have just given her the oil, or he could have just made the tax collectors dissappear; the senarios are endless. The point is.... God expected the widow to do everything she could do. Once she had done everything she was capable of doing in obedience, God did the part she could not do for herself, He created a miracle. I love this story and it had brought me through numerous difficult times very similar to what Vennessa is experiencing now.
Of course I will write letters and make phone calls. But most importantly, I will join in prayer with all of these other believers who know the true Omnipotent Father who is loving her and going to bring her out of the furnace. Do no be faint of heart. Trust in the Lord with all of your heart, lean not on your own understanding, and He will direct your path.
God is with you Vennessa, just as he was with me and many others. God brings me through every trial and He will bring you through too.

The family court judges "have too much power". My wife is currently in a custody battle with her ex-husband. The ex-husband has been in and out of the children's lives since they were babies, (they are now 14 and 15). Forget about child support and medical coverage he was supposed to provide. He claimed parental alienation which is a pet peeve of the Judge that was presiding over the case. We were warned that the forensic psychologist does not care for Christian upbringing and to not mention it. I/we could not deny Christ, so He was mentioned. The forensic psychologist's report is clearly discriminatory against us as Christians, including referring to our daughter as wanting to be the "Savior of the Family" because she wants to break the cycle of divorce that her parents and both sets of grandparents experienced. We home schooled our children and both the Father and his parents undermined it every time the children were with them, including telling the children their Mother wasn't smart enough to teach them. Eventually, through other circumstances we had to stop home schooling...and the education that the children receive in school is FAR inferior to that of the home schooling. In addition, if the children are doing well and passing any state exams that NC requires there should be no problem. The Judge has an agenda.
You are in our prayers. We sent an email to the State governors and opposing attorney to express our dismay at what is happening to the Mills children.
