NC Judge orders homeschool mother to put kids in public school

March 11, 2009, Raleigh, NC - Venessa Mills is fighting a legal battle for the heart and soul of homeschooling in North Carolina. On Friday, March 6, Judge Ned W. Mangum stripped her of the right to homeschool, and ordered her three children to enter public school.

Mills was forced to defend her right to homeschool during divorce proceedings brought on by her husband's unfaithfulness. Mr. Mills admitted, under oath, to repeatedly committing adultery. Even with abundant evidence showing the Mills children are well adjusted and well educated, Judge Mangum ruled overwhelmingly against Mrs. Mills on every point. He stated the children would do better in public school despite the fact that they are currently at or beyond their grade level. Evidence showed two children tested several grades ahead.

When issuing his verdict Judge Mangum stated his decision was not ideologically or religiously motivated. However, he told Mrs. Mills public school will "challenge the ideas you've taught them."

What has emerged is a picture of a clearly liberal judge imposing his beliefs and striking down traditional values. Mangum, a Democrat appointee, disregarded the facts of the case in favor of his own agenda. Such anti-conservative prejudice is increasingly legislated from the bench, and appears to be encouraged by the Democratic Obama administration.

Robyn Williams, friend and homeschool mother of four was present at the proceeding. "I have never seen such injustice and such a direct attack against homeschooling," said Williams. "This judge clearly took personal issue with Venessa's stance on education and faith, even though her children are doing great. If her right to homeschool can be taken away so easily, what will this mean for homeschoolers state wide, or even nationally?"

On March 24th lawmakers in North Carolina will be reminded of the sheer numbers of homeschoolers in their state. As students and their parents descend on the capitol, organizers of the Capital Fest 2009 field trip will show they have a voice in North Carolina legislation regarding education.

Williams is rallying homeschoolers from across the nation to fight back to defend their rights as Americans to educate their children. She feels the judge has been given a free hand to impose his personal opinions and needs to reexamine his decisions. Robyn, I work a full time job and my wife stays at home with our kids. We don't get by on much more than what the plaintiff in this case will get from her husband (some months). We would like to give some money to help her either in the court case or in preparing for life after the judgment (as a supplement to low child support payment). It may not be prudent to list her address, but maybe a PO Box or an office address that we could send donations to would be helpful (maybe in care of her attorney). Let us know.

We would also like a place to contribute, perhaps a fund could be set up. This judge ordering her husband to remain in the home is an affront to women everywhere. I doubt he would feel the same way if it were his wife violating their marriage. I hope she can get a just and clearheaded ruling.

Robyn, I will be praying for Venessa and her children. I also pray for her husband and the judge to have softened hearts. While this is a sickening invasion of her rights the Lord has her covered and will cover the hearts and minds of her children. The Lord would not allow this unless He knew they would be okay. My heart is to homeschool our children but the Lord has shown me over and over again that His ways are not my ways and that He knows that my kids need to be sharpened by coming up against opposing beliefs. This has been hard for me but I see how the Lord is molding my faith and trust in His sufficiency. This situation is an injustice and a cruel blow to this family. I know however that we have a mighty and holy God who knows the voice of His children and WILL work all things together for those who love Him.

I think you should send a copy of this press release to Bill O'Reilly at Fox News and ask him to investigate it on his show.

Venessa, You will be in my prayers. I will also be praying for an appeal to this decision. The outcome was totally inappropriate and twisted.
Have you ever contacted the ACLJ / Jay Segelow (spelling may be incorrect), or the Christian defense group headed by Alan Keys? If not, please do so.

I too am a Christian homeschooling mom in NC, and this family will be kept in my prayers. Is it possible to pass my email address on to Vanessa Mills? It is: mary@tailoredlifecoaching.com

I am a life coach as well as an advocate that has helped other moms in similar situations, of fighting biased courts and judges! All my services are free, so this is NOT a sales pitch in any way, shape or form. I know of a group that can help her and just want to pass on that info personally rather than in an open area such as this!

May God Bless you for putting this out here and bless this family as well to see justice done for the actual best interest of these children!

I am not a Christian homeschooler - but I am a parent that cares about the education and moral lessons that my daughter learns at public schools. I am new to homeschooling (6 months), and have found it the greatest joy, most amazing thing to watch my daughter for the first time in her school career EXCEL. I support your right as a parent to home school your children and pray that everything clears up for you. You have all of our support.

I have a face book cause set up to bring attention to your cause. I have also contacted the North Carolinian Home School Group to find out if they can look into your case. Please contact them also.

Do not mistake this as a simple custody battle ... this is a danger too all of our rights to make decisions on education for our children!
